ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has strongly condemned a drone attack on the Taibah power distribution station in Madina, describing the strike as a “grave provocation” and expressing concern over the targeting of civilian infrastructure near the Prophet’s Mosque.

In a statement issued on Friday, the Foreign Office said the attack on the facility supplying electricity to the Holy Prophet’s (PBUH) Mosque was “reprehensible” and a matter of deep concern for Muslims around the world.

Pakistan stressed that the sanctity of the Two Holy Mosques and the safety and security of pilgrims must be respected under all circumstances.

The condemnation came a day after the Saudi-led coalition fighting Yemen’s Houthis said the group had targeted the Taibah power distribution station in Madina.

The Foreign Office reiterated Pakistan’s support for Saudi Arabia’s security and sovereignty and called for the protection of civilian infrastructure and religious sites from attacks.

The incident has drawn international attention because of the location of the targeted facility and its role in supplying electricity to one of Islam’s holiest sites.
