ISLAMABAD: Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is expected to arrive in Pakistan on Tuesday for an official visit during which he will hold key meetings with the country’s top leadership amid ongoing diplomatic developments involving Iran and the United States.
According to sources, President Pezeshkian is scheduled to meet President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and other senior government officials. Discussions are expected to focus on bilateral relations, trade cooperation, regional security and matters of mutual interest.
The anticipated visit comes as diplomatic efforts continue between Iran and the United States under a mediation framework supported by Pakistan and Qatar.
Earlier, Pakistan and Qatar issued a joint statement following the conclusion of the Lake Lucerne Summit and the first meeting of a high-level committee involving representatives from Iran, the United States and the two mediating countries.
The talks were held in Burgenstock, Switzerland, under the framework of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). Participants described the discussions as positive and constructive, noting progress toward advancing negotiations and establishing a mechanism for future technical talks.
Under the agreement, a High-Level Committee has been formed to oversee the mediation process and provide political guidance. Chief negotiators will lead working groups focusing on nuclear issues, sanctions, monitoring mechanisms and dispute resolution.
The committee has also approved a roadmap aimed at reaching a final agreement within 60 days, paving the way for immediate technical-level discussions.
To reduce the risk of misunderstandings and ensure the safe passage of commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz, the parties agreed to establish a direct communication channel during the negotiation period.
In addition, a de-confliction cell involving the concerned parties and Lebanon will be created with the support of mediators to help maintain the cessation of military operations in line with the MoU.
Technical discussions are expected to continue throughout the week in Switzerland as mediators work to maintain momentum and create conditions conducive to a comprehensive agreement.
