ISLAMABAD: On the occasion of World Environment Day, Zakat Foundation of America (ZFA) Pakistan organized the “Guardians of the Earth” Youth Climate Innovation Challenge, bringing together talented university students from across the country to present innovative solutions for environmental and climate-related issues.
The competition served as a platform for young innovators to showcase projects focused on environmental conservation, climate change adaptation, sustainable business models, climate-resilient technologies, recycling-based products, and other eco-friendly initiatives.
Participants presented their ideas before a panel of environmental experts and professionals, demonstrating the growing role of youth-driven innovation in promoting sustainability.
Addressing the event, Dr. Fazal-ur-Rehman, Country Director of ZFA Pakistan, emphasized the importance of involving young people in climate action and sustainable development.
He stated that youth possess the creativity, energy, and determination needed to address pressing environmental challenges and help build a greener future.
“Climate change is one of the most significant challenges facing humanity today, and young people have a critical role to play in developing innovative and practical solutions.
The chief guest, Dr. Muhammad Bashir Khan, Member of the Environmental Protection Tribunal, commended the participants for their creativity and dedication to environmental sustainability. He noted that platforms such as this play a vital role in encouraging youth-led initiatives and generating practical solutions to environmental challenges.
The competition featured a wide range of projects addressing waste management, recycling, green entrepreneurship, climate resilience, and sustainable resource utilization. Participants demonstrated how innovative thinking and technological approaches can help tackle environmental issues at both local and national levels.
At the conclusion of the event, the top three teams were honored for their outstanding contributions. The first prize was awarded to Mudassir Aslam from the University of Lahore, founder of ReLife.pk, for his innovative work in sustainable environmental solutions.
The second position went to Anum Nawaz from the University of Sargodha, founder of VerdiGrow, for her promising climate-focused initiative.
The third prize was secured by a team from the University of the Punjab comprising Maleeha Zahoor, Purva Naseer, and Maham Mehmood. Their project, “GIS-Based Urban Green Spaces Model,” presented a data-driven approach to enhancing urban sustainability and environmental planning.
Winners received cash prizes and certificates in recognition of their creativity, innovation, and commitment to addressing climate and environmental challenges.
