President Alvi to hold office despite end of tenure: law minister

ISLAMABAAD -UNS: Despite end of his term due in September, the President Arif Alvi will remain in office, Federal Minister for Law Azam Nazir Tarar said.

The constitutional office of the president could not be left vacant as per the 18th Amendment in the Constitution.

The minister said that the electoral college of the president was the parliament and the provincial assemblies, therefore, the new president would be elected after the formation of a new government after general elections.

Alvi will keep serving the office of the president till the new setup takes charge.

The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has yet to decide when the elections will take place after the demarcation of constituencies under the new census.
