Move comes after Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi departs Islamabad
-UNS: U.S. President Donald Trump has announced the cancellation of a planned visit by American negotiators to Pakistan for talks with Iran, in a sudden shift in diplomatic efforts aimed at reviving a ceasefire.
Speaking to Fox News, Trump said he had instructed U.S. envoys not to proceed with the trip to Islamabad. “They can call us anytime they want,” he stated, suggesting a change in the approach to ongoing negotiations.
The White House had earlier confirmed that senior officials, including Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, were scheduled to travel to Pakistan’s capital to facilitate discussions with Iranian representatives.
The development comes shortly after Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, departed Islamabad late Saturday. According to two Pakistani officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, Araghchi concluded his visit and left the country the same evening.
The abrupt cancellation raises questions about the future of diplomatic efforts involving Washington, Tehran, and Islamabad, as tensions in the region remain a focus of international concern.
