Pakistan Calls on US and Iran to Extend Ceasefire Ahead of Expiry

By Our Correspondent

Pakistan on Tuesday urged the United States and Iran to extend their two-week ceasefire, stressing that continued dialogue is essential for regional stability as the truce nears its end.

The appeal was made by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar during a meeting in Islamabad with US Chargé d’Affaires Natalie A Baker, according to the Foreign Office.

Dar reiterated Pakistan’s longstanding position that diplomacy remains the only viable path to resolving ongoing tensions and achieving lasting peace.

During the meeting, Dar emphasised the need for sustained engagement between Washington and Tehran and encouraged both sides to consider extending the ceasefire.

In response, Baker appreciated Pakistan’s constructive role in facilitating dialogue and promoting peace in the region.

The ceasefire, brokered earlier this month by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, followed weeks of escalating conflict in the Middle East.

However, the first round of talks between the two sides failed to produce a breakthrough due to disagreements over key issues, including Iran’s nuclear programme, sanctions, and regional security concerns.

Pakistan is now preparing to host a second round of talks, with the US confirming participation, while Tehran has yet to finalise its decision.

Meanwhile, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said Islamabad remains engaged with all parties and continues to prioritise diplomacy.
