KARACHI: Rescue teams on Tuesday continued search and recovery operations at Karachi’s Gul Plaza as the death toll from the deadly fire increased to 28, while dozens of people are still reported missing.
The fire, which broke out earlier, caused a partial collapse of the ground-plus-three-storey commercial building that housed nearly 1,200 shops. Smoke continued to rise from the debris as heavy machinery was used to clear rubble, particularly from the basement area.
According to Rescue 1122 officials, seven bodies have been handed over to relatives, while 21 remain at the morgue awaiting identification through DNA testing. Police officials stated that mobile phone data traced 38 individuals to the plaza out of more than 65 people initially reported missing.
Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab said the fire had been brought under control and confirmed that all relevant departments remained on high alert until rescue operations are fully completed. He also announced that the Sindh government has formed an inquiry committee to investigate the cause of the fire and assess any negligence.
