‘Sukkur barrage water storage capacity decreased from 1.5m cusecs to 0.9m’

KARACHI -UNS: Minister irrigation department Sindh Mr Jam Khan Shoro has asked to the international and national experts of irrigation to suggest for increasing the water capacity from 0.9 million cusecs to 1.5 million cusecs water at Sukkut Barrage.
He said that it was 1.5 million cusecs capacity of water when sukkur barrage was constructed but it was decreased till 0.9 million cusecs.

Jam Khan Shoro minister irrigation department was speaking as chief guest at Hydraulic Model study workshop on Sukkur Barrage organized by Sindh Barrages Improvement Project SBIP Rehabilitation and modernization of Sukkur Barrage held at a hotel at Karachi.
He said that Sukkur barrage was constructed a 100 year ago at that time there was not technics.

He said that international and national experts concerned were invited to suggest the reduce the sediment issue and increase water capacity at Sukkur Barrage.

He said that it was a political will and commitment with people of Sindh to construct the new Sukkur Barrage.
He said that experts should advise for the location of construction of Sukkur Barrage.

Mohammad Ibrahim Samoo expert of irrigation water said that everage rain fall in Sindh from 100 mili meter to 200 mili meter and evaporation is 1000 mm to 2000 mm in Sindh and all income depands on river Indus and Sukkur Barrage keeps important for agriculture and economy in Sindh.
He said that original capacity of water is 1.5 millions cusecs as it was reduced 0.9 million cusecs. He said that during 1940 flood Protective bunds were constructed.
He said that 1976, 2010 and 2022 were among high floods and now efforts were taken to protect the Sukkur barrage from floods and sediments..
He said that Sindh province can not surive without Sukkur Barrage and whole sindh will become desert hence it is our property to protect.

Aslam Ansari former additional secretary irrigation department said that Sukkur Barrage and survey took 20 years to construct it and several survey were carried out to construct Sukkur Barrage. He said that since last two years surveys are continued to construct new sukkur barrage.

Three options were surveyed for construction the new Sukkur Barrage.
One site is proposed at upstream of Sukkur Barrage , second is existing site of Sukkur Barrage and third is at downstream of Sukkur Barrage at its three kms distance.

Ddin Mughal briefed the workshop that more than 90 years aged Sukkur Barrage is located about 320 kms nothern east of Karachi, first barrage on River Indus Commissioned in 1932. He said that barrage irrigates 8 million acres land through 7 off taking canals. The scope of works were identified during feasibility study conducted from year 2011-2018 under Sindh Water Sector Improvement Project WSIP funded by World Bank. The rehabilitation of existing structure replacement of all gates of main barrage, improvement in gate operational system, replacement of electrical installations modernization of monitoring and surveillance equipment dredging of barrage at upstream and down stream, desilting in the initial reaches of Rice canal and construction of offices, labs, workshop and residential buildings.
He said that inorder to identify the solution for the above issue PMO SBIP irrigation department government of Sindh prepared ToRs with the consultation of World Bank intended to engage International laboratory to conduct Physical and numerical model studies. The consultancy services of M/S ARTELIA france has been procured to under take the physical and numerical Hydraulic model study of sukkur barrage with scope of work as under. Increase in flood conveyance capacity of the barrage. Stability of the riprap protection to ensure safety of the works during floods and flushing operations. Efficiency of sediment flushing to remove tye shoals from up stream of the barrage near right bank. Sediment exclusion at the intakes of right bank irrigation canals.

International sediment expert Mr. Ed Adkinson UK briefed on sediment along with Sukkur Barrage said that since 2022 to 2024 by the flushing operations and sampling of sediment , special work on right bank canals..
International another sediment expert Matthieu DE LINARES from france briefed about physical and numerical model studies of Sukkur Barrage.

He said that downstream stage discharge curve raised since around year 2000 at Sukkur Barrage.

Nazeer Essani PC PCMU Planing and Development Nazir Essani said that irrigation officials restored the gate no 47 of Sukkur Barrage with hectic efforts under the minster irrigation Mr Jam Khan Shoro..

He said that work of rehabilitation and modernization was going on by SBIP..
