TEHRAN -UNS: Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces, Field Marshal Asim Munir, arrived in Tehran on Tuesday at the head of a high-level delegation for talks with senior Iranian officials, amid Islamabad’s diplomatic efforts to facilitate dialogue between Iran and the United States.
Iran’s Mehr News Agency reported Munir’s arrival, while Tasnim said the discussions were expected to cover bilateral relations, security cooperation and regional developments, including Pakistan’s potential role in easing tensions between Tehran and Washington.
The visit comes amid stalled US–Iran negotiations and continuing disagreements over regional security and maritime access through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei has emphasised the importance of relations with Pakistan, describing ties between the neighbouring countries as significant and distinctive. He said bilateral cooperation remained a key focus, alongside security-related discussions.
Munir’s visit is also expected to provide an opportunity to exchange views on regional stability and prospects for renewed diplomatic engagement. However, the precise agenda and any concrete outcomes have yet to be officially confirmed.
The future of the Strait of Hormuz remains a central regional concern, given its importance to international shipping and global energy supplies. Iranian officials have discussed proposals to restore normal maritime traffic, although differences with Washington continue to complicate diplomatic efforts.
The visit follows Munir’s previous trip to Tehran in August, when he met senior Iranian leaders as Pakistan sought to encourage dialogue and de-escalation.
The outcome of the latest talks could offer further indications of Islamabad’s diplomatic role, although any progress towards renewed US–Iran negotiations will depend on the positions adopted by both sides.
