RAWALPINDI: Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces (COAS & CDF) Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir chaired the 277th Corps Commanders’ Conference at General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi, where the military leadership reviewed Pakistan’s security situation, counter-terrorism operations and operational preparedness.
The conference opened with Fateha for the martyrs of the armed forces, law enforcement agencies and civil society who lost their lives in the line of duty. Participants paid tribute to their sacrifices and those who gave their lives for the country.
The commanders stressed the need for a high level of operational readiness in view of the evolving security environment. The forum also reaffirmed Pakistan’s stated right to self-defence and targeted action against terrorism originating from Afghanistan.
Security Situation
During the meeting, the military leadership held the Afghan Taliban authorities responsible for the consequences of what it described as the facilitation of terrorism, and alleged that such activities were being carried out at India’s behest.
The commanders expressed appreciation for continued intelligence-based counter-terrorism operations by law enforcement agencies. At the same time, they emphasised that military and law-enforcement measures should be supported by broader efforts to address the underlying factors contributing to militancy and insecurity.
These measures include improving people-centred governance at the grassroots level, strengthening engagement with the public, disrupting what the forum described as the terror-crime nexus operating with the support of vested interests, and enhancing police capabilities.
The conference said these efforts should remain aligned with the National Action Plan and Vision Azm-e-Istehkam, which serve as government frameworks for addressing security challenges.
Warning Against Internal Unrest
The commanders also discussed the importance of maintaining internal stability and reiterated their opposition to attempts to create unrest in the country.
According to the conference statement, any attempt to create circumstances similar to the May 9 events, regardless of the stated justification, would be met with decisive action under the law.
The forum said such action would be taken without hesitation or discrimination, while emphasising that measures would remain within the framework of the rule of law.
The conference also reaffirmed support for the people of Kashmir and stressed the importance of protecting Islam’s holiest sites.
