ISLAMABAD : As Pakistanis, we are used to hear a new episode of corruption, irregularity and abuse of power by those at the helm of affairs. This happens mostly when appointments are made to please friends.
Similar things happened at Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) when Ali Javaid Hamdani was appointed as Managing Director SNGPL by the then Prime Minister in 2020 in the name of bringing energy expert from the market as the then PM’s energy team was of the viewpoint that the senior management of SNGPL is unable to improve the organization’s performance.
Interestingly enough this happened at a time when SNGPL’s share price was all time high while it was rated as one of the best performing public sector organizations.
Regarding the professional profile of Ali Javaid Hamdani the inner sources of SNGPL said that he is unknown person for company, and perhaps the country’s energy sector, Hamdani was introduced as a guy who had been affiliated with some giant global corporate and claimed to be handling their multimillion projects.
Although shortly after he assumed his charge as MD, his decisions and performance started raising questions about his capability and experience.An informed source later revealed that Hamdani had no prior experience and expertise in energy or gas sector. The source even claims that he was jobless for a long time before he was appointed as MD SNGPL.
Sources said that SNGPL had a history of MD appointments from within its ranks. This was a best practice as historically these MDs have spent decades at the company before reaching the top slot thus enabling them to understand the organizational culture, Dos and Don’ts etc.
The sources further explained that Ali Hamdani was an outsider to the organization who instead of respecting the internal culture of SNGPL and utilizing the best among the Senior Management, did his best to discourage them. In gross violation of the Company’s HR manual, Hamdani made many senior management personnel as OSD for longest period. Not only this but forged enquiries were opened against the senior management and junior officers were deputed as enquiry officers aimed at demoralizing the management. (To be continued)
