ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has constituted a three-member larger bench to hear a petition challenging Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) proposed protest and long march scheduled for September 27.
IHC Chief Justice Sarfraz Dogar heard the petition filed by Islamabad-based businessman Waqas Ahmed and formed the larger bench in view of the matter’s sensitivity.
The bench, comprising Chief Justice Dogar, Justice Azam Khan and Justice Muhammad Asif, will take up the case on September 10.
The court issued notices to the Attorney General of Pakistan and summoned the inspectors general of police, advocate generals and chief secretaries of all four provinces to appear in person at the next hearing.
During the proceedings, the chief justice questioned how the petitioner qualified as an affected party.
His counsel argued that a protest entering the federal capital could disrupt residents’ daily lives and commercial activities.
The lawyer submitted newspaper clippings and statements attributed to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa chief minister concerning the proposed protest.
He maintained that political parties should pursue available legal remedies instead of attempting to influence state institutions or judicial proceedings through street demonstrations.
