Iran Establishes New Authority to Regulate and Charge Strait of Hormuz Transit Fees

DUBAI (AFP) – Iran has reportedly established a new body to oversee vessel movement through the Strait of Hormuz and impose transit charges on ships using the strategic waterway, according to maritime publication Lloyd’s List.
The report stated that the newly formed “Persian Gulf Strait Authority” has introduced regulations requiring vessels to secure prior transit approval and pay toll fees before entering the strait. Ship operators must also provide detailed information regarding ownership, insurance coverage, crew members, and intended routes.
Iranian state broadcaster Press TV earlier claimed that Tehran had implemented a system aimed at asserting sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz. According to the channel, vessels crossing the area have been receiving official regulations through the email address [email protected].
The development comes amid heightened tensions in the Gulf region following ongoing conflict involving Iran, the United States, and Israel. US President Donald Trump recently suspended a military operation intended to guarantee unrestricted merchant shipping through the strait, expressing optimism over a possible agreement with Tehran.
Since late February, Iran has tightened control over the crucial maritime corridor, through which nearly 20 percent of global oil supplies typically pass. Iranian officials have repeatedly suggested introducing a toll system for commercial ships transiting the waterway, potentially sharing revenue with neighboring Oman.
