Over 650,000 children at risk of famine amid ‘shameful int’l silence’: Gaza Govt

UNS: Palestinian children inspect the damage at the site of an overnight Israeli airstrike that hit a tent sheltering displaced people, in Khan Younis, southern Gaza Strip.

The Gaza Strip is grappling with a severe humanitarian crisis as a total Israeli blockade enters its 103rd day, with government officials warning that hundreds of thousands, including 650,000 children, are facing famine amidst what they described as “shameful international silence,” Al Jazeera reported.

A government statement has painted a grim picture of the situation, noting that approximately 1.25 million people in Gaza are currently experiencing “catastrophic hunger.”

Officials stated that Israeli forces have closed all crossings, preventing the entry of essential food, medicine, and fuel. The government statement characterised this measure as “one of the most severe crimes of collective siege in modern times.”

The deprivation of critical supplies has resulted in a mounting death toll. “Over the past three days, we have recorded dozens of deaths due to shortages of food and essential medical supplies, in a ruthless humanitarian situation,” the statement read.

According to the officials, 67 children have already died of famine, highlighting the dire impact of the blockade on the youngest population.
