Khanpur-Upper seeks government attention to solve public problems

By Engineer Iftikhar Chaudhry

Nestled in the serene hills of Haripur District, Khanpur Tehsil is a hidden gem waiting to be explored. This region, extending from the historic Khanpur Dam to the lush green valleys leading up to Murree, boasts unparalleled natural beauty. The area is enriched with scenic landscapes, streams like Nadi Haro and Nallah, and countless verdant meadows adorned with tall  pine trees. Yet, this potential paradise remains largely untapped.
One of the most pressing needs of the region is the construction of two critical roads: the Jabri Bangla–Najafpur road and the Derkot–Nallah road. These routes, if built, would revolutionize connectivity for local communities while opening up the area to domestic and international tourism. Notably, the Derkot–Nallah road holds special significance, as it provides access to the famous Noori Waterfall, a breathtaking natural wonder hidden within these hills.
The Jabri Bangla–Najafpur road has long been a demand of the locals, yet it remains a pipe dream despite numerous political promises. Similarly, the Derkot–Nallah road has immense potential to serve as a lifeline for the region. Not only would it facilitate the movement of locals and goods, but it would also open up Noori Waterfall as a major tourist attraction. Currently, accessing the waterfall is an arduous task due to the lack of proper infrastructure, which discourages both locals and tourists from fully experiencing its charm.
It is also crucial to highlight the tireless efforts of Yousaf khan Omar Ayoub And Arshad Ayoub , whose dedication and service to this region have been exemplary. His consistent advocacy for improved infrastructure and development has inspired hope among the locals. Leaders like him represent the kind of vision and commitment that Khanpur Upper desperately needs to unlock its true potential.
For years, promises have been made, and plaques have been unveiled by various political figures, but tangible progress remains elusive. Recently, a plaque was placed by a member of the National Assembly from the Pakistan Muslim League (N), but the project still lies dormant.
The people of this area live in challenging conditions. During the rainy season, the overflowing waters of Nadi Haro make crossing almost impossible. Tragically, several lives have been lost attempting to cross the turbulent waters, and funerals have even been halted midway because the bereaved families could not reach the other side of the valley.
Similarly, the lack of a proper road between Derkot and Nallah isolates communities and hampers access to essential services like education, healthcare, and markets. Adding to this is the missed opportunity to develop Noori Waterfall into a prime tourist destination, which could generate income and employment for locals while showcasing the natural beauty of the region to the world.
Despite the area’s immense potential, the lack of infrastructure has caused a significant migration of locals to Haripur and other cities. These villages and hamlets, rich in history and culture, are becoming increasingly desolate. The inhabitants, who once thrived amidst nature’s bounty, are now forced to seek opportunities elsewhere.
Building these roads would not only provide vital connectivity but also become key attractions for tourists from Islamabad and beyond. Imagine a picturesque drive that takes just 90 minutes from Islamabad, leading to some of the most stunning views in the region, including the majestic Noori Waterfall. These roads could transform Khanpur Upper into a prime tourist destination while uplifting the local economy.
To preserve the natural beauty of this region, it is equally important to provide alternative energy sources to prevent deforestation. The forests of Khanpur are precious assets that must be safeguarded for future generations. Without immediate intervention, this region could fade into obscurity, much like the ruins of Mohenjo-Daro and Harappa.
This is a heartfelt appeal to the government and all stakeholders: invest in the future of Khanpur Upper. Build the Jabri baglow -Najafpur and Derkot–Nallah roads, provide sustainable energy solutions, and unlock the true potential of this hidden paradise. Let the world discover the untouched beauty of Noori Waterfall and the surrounding hills. The people of this region deserve better, and the time to act is now.
