UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has welcomed and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has welcomed the Beijing Declaration, which involves an agreement among prominent Palestinian groups to unify and create an interim unity government, APP reports.
The prime minister specifically praised China for achieving the significant diplomatic milestone.
In a statement on his official X account, PM Shehbaz remarked that the people of Palestine had endured prolonged hardship and suffering and the agreement sparks hope for achieving lasting peace.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said that “I think all steps towards unity are to be welcomed and encouraged,” his spokesman Stephane Dujarric said, adding that Guterres “very much welcomes the signing of the Beijing Declaration by the Palestinian factions.”
Speaking at the UN, spokesperson Dujarric said unity amongst the Palestinian factions was crucial.
“Palestinian unity … is crucial for peace and security and for advancing the aspirations of the Palestinian people for self-determination and for fully independent, democratic, contiguous, viable and sovereign Palestinian state,” he said.
