SSGC negligence:9 Crore damages case against Sui Southern Gas Company

KARACHI : A case has been filed against Sui Southern Gas Company(SSGC)  for a total of Rs.nine crore rupees as damages .Five children who became orphans due to the death of their parents in gas explosion in Orangi Town,Karachi are stuck in trouble.

Two claims have been filed against Sui Southern Gas Company(SSGC) for a total of Rs nine crore rupees as damages due to financial difficulties.

Senior Civil Judge has issued a notice to the Sui Southern Gas Company on the claims and sought a reply by May 18.

According to the details, five children who were orphaned due to the death of their parents due to gas explosion in Orangi Town on October 31, 2022, at 2 o’clock mid night, including two sisters Aliza and Areba and three brothers Ali Raza, Anas and Owais have become orphans.

In the incident, his father Mohammad Riazuddin and mother Hasan Aara died due to burns.
After the death of the parents, the children have been stuck in financial difficulties and other problems, on which they have approached the court for damages against Sui Southern Gas.

In the court of Senior Civil Judge Gharbi,Karachi two claims of Rs. 9 crore damages were heard against SSGC by the orphaned children due to the death of their parents due to gas pipeline explosion in Orangi Town.

On behalf of the eldest sister Aliza Dokhtar Muhammad Riazuddin through her lawyer Usman Farooq Advocate in the court of Senior Civil Judge Gharbi two separate claims for damages totaling Rs. 9 crore.

Two separate claims No. 789/2023 and 790/2023 have been filed in the court of Senior Civil Judge Gharbi on behalf of Aliza Dokhtar Muhammad Riazuddin through her lawyer Usman Farooq Advocate.One claim has been filed on the death of the father while the other claim has been filed on the death of the mother.Sui Southern Gas Company has been made a party in the claims.

It was contended in the pleadings that Sui Southern Gas Company is a statutory corporation responsible for the supply and distribution of gas to the citizens of Karachi while managing the pipelines and supply system within the city. SSGC failed in delivering, Aliza’s parents died due to Sui Southern Gas Company’s negligence.

On October 31, 2022, at 2 o’clock in the night, the parents died due to the gas leakage explosion in the house. The gas leakage explosion destroyed the entire house.Walls, furniture, jewellery, cupboards, cash and documents were burnt to ashes.

The people of the neighborhood informed the nearest complaint office about the incident, but not a single person from SSGC reached the spot or took any action, the witnesses of this are the people of the neighborhood.

Even before this incident, residents of the area complained to the authorities regarding gas leakage, but despite this, the problem of gas leakage was not resolved, which later caused the incident.The legal heirs of the deceased are entitled to compensation under the Fatal Accident Act 1855 in the incident that occurred due to the negligence of the Sui Southern Gas Company.

The petitioner’s father died at the age of 50 while he was healthy, in the sense that he could naturally provide for the family well for another 20 years.

Calculate their annual income and increase in annual income for 20 years, then they could earn a total of 4 crore 45 lakh 6 thousand rupees. Therefore, their children are entitled to compensation of 4 crore 45 lakh 60 thousand rupees.

The court has issued a notice to the Sui Southern Gas Company on the claims and has asked for a reply on May 18.
