Midnight Raid – Will government PTI talks end

The coalition government appears to dragging the country into a political quagmire by procrastinating the election issue- the polls are the best solution out. Bulldozing the gate of the former Punjab chief minister’s Gulberg house was a bad plan to pressurize the PTI and delay the polls negotiations.
Punjab Police not only terrorized the family members it also registered a case against the former chief minister Parvez Elahi claiming that its officials were “attacked with stones, batons and petrol” during a raid on the PTI leader’s house in Lahore to arrest him in a corruption case.
The raiding team, which included officials of Anti-Corruption Establish¬ment and police, used an armored vehicle to break open the main gate of the former Punjab chief minister’s Gulberg residence and arrested 12 people, mostly his employees, from the house.
Terrorizing family members in a mid-night attack is an absolute violation of human rights and indicates political vendetta in full swing. Ali Amin Gandapur too is in police custody.
The government should have been sending reconciliatory signals to develop a national consensus for the general elections but unfortunately the mid night raid has antagonized the PTI and Imran Khan and his team is not happy. PTI leaders including Fawad Chaudhry has condemned the raid on Elahi’s house.
The PTI leaders will be meeting to decide if it should continue the talks with the government for deciding the polls date.
Khan will surely retaliate and add more to the government sufferings. The IMF is not respecting the governments mandate and despite all conditions being fulfilled by the government its not in a mood to release the lifesaving dollars tranche.Who would like to offer a loan in such uncertain conditions.
This political turmoil and the role of the judiciary in circumventing the parliament’s decision to defy its verdicts is adding to the economic woes. With political instability comes economic turbulence and food inflation and insecurity which is a major factor creating disharmony in society and demoralizing the entire population.
The coalition government is not going to last any stress test as each political party has its agenda and axe to grind. MQM the most unhappy coalition partner can rock the government and end its rule if its not satisfied and assured that its political power in Sindh will not be undermined in the current population counting. Ameer JI Karachi, has already raised the red flag and claimed the current population census is highly manipulated to award more seats to the Sind rural areas while undermining the political power and rights of the urban population.
The country is on a political path which could be the most challenging to the establishment since 1971. The PTI government talks should produce a solution and the government should ensure that no action disrupts the talks. The raid on Elahi’s residence could have been postponed.WTP-EDITORIAL
