Israeli security cabinet recommends approval of Gaza deal

Reuters: The Israeli security cabinet has recommended approving the Gaza ceasefire and hostage return deal, ahead of a full cabinet meeting expected later on Friday, a statement from the prime minister’s office said.

Cabinet is expected to meet at 3.30pm (1330 GMT) to give final ratification to the agreement, which Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said is expected to take effect on Sunday.

Israel’s President Isaac Herzog has welcomed security cabinet’s decision to approve the Gaza ceasefire and hostage release deal and expects the government “to do so as well soon”.

“This is a vital step on the path to upholding the basic commitment a nation has to its citizens,” Herzog said, as quoted by Times of Israel.

The president says he is under “no illusions” that the agreement will not bring challenges and “painful and agonizing moments”.
