Islamabad :A senior leader of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI), Maulana Abdul Salam, was shot dead in a targeted attack in Charsadda on Monday, triggering widespread condemnation across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s religious and political circles.

Police said the cleric was attacked near Hanif Petrol Pump on the Mandani–Takht Bhai Road within the Mandani Police Station limits, when unidentified gunmen on a motorcycle opened fire, killing him on the spot before fleeing.

Law enforcement personnel reached the site soon after the attack, cordoned off the area and launched a search operation to trace the assailants. Police said investigations were underway to determine whether the killing was motivated by sectarian or political reasons.
